There's two types of armor in Legends: Heavy and Light
They each have their advantages and disadvantages, but you should try out both.

Heavy
As you might have guessed, heavy armor is heavy. Because of the excess weight, you'll be slowed down greatly, but gain more momentum. When skiing, you will be able to travel as fast as lights. You will, however, need much more energy to jet (even with energy module), and must conserve your energy (using the tapping technique). Also, you will not be able to use the rail gun.
However, you're much stronger and it's much harder to destroy you theoretically (your limited mobility is a disadavantage, so skilled dodging is needed) With a disc launcher, a light can be killed with 2 direct hits. But a heavy takes 4 or 5 direct hits to kill. (0.4.1c39 build) Also, to fight those pesky lights you have a mortar instead of a railgun. The mortar is the most powerful weapon in the game and is insta-kill, capable of taking out groups of light-armors in one hit.
Also, you can help out your team by turret and inventory farming. You can deploy remote inventories (just like regular inventories, except you cannot change armor at them) and turrets (ion cannon style, but very accurate and powerful). Also, you can hold 5 weapons compared to the 3 the light can hold.

Light
This is the default armor that you start out with. It offers very quick movement and more flexibility in maneuvering. It enables you to use the deadly Rail Gun, and is good at dodging. However, you wont be able to use the mortar or deploy stations, and you have to be careful because you are fairly easy to kill. This armor has 3 weapon slots.
